Create your ideal email layout in Klaviyo
Did you know you can create visually appealing email layouts using the email template editor? Whether you need to design an inverted pyramid, single column, or a zigzag, Klaviyo gives you the tools you need to streamline the process. Let’s walk through how to add horizontal content to create the email layout you need.
To follow along, navigate to the Templates tab in your Klaviyo account and click on the Create Template button. While you can select a pre-built template from the Klaviyo library, for this example, we recommend using a basic template. Okay, now let’s get started!
Differentiate sections and blocks
In the email template editor, sections help you organize your content effectively. They let you group information logically, such as headers, image-and-text sections, and company details. You can easily add or remove sections to fine-tune your email layout. Within each section, blocks are how you add specific content like images, text, social icons, and buttons.
Key blocks found in the email template editor
Add those final touches to your email. Use the blocks to customize and arrange your content to make your emails engaging and clear for your audience. Let's explore the use cases for each block to help you choose the right one for your email design:
Create space between sections
Add additional space in your email or within a specific section or block with the following blocks:
Drop shadow
Enhance your message by adding a drop shadow to highlight important images or text, giving them more depth and emphasis.
Divider
Easily create a visual break between different parts of your email with a simple line, making it clear where one section ends and another begins.
Spacer
Use the spacer block to customize the amount of space between blocks vertically. This helps improve the overall layout by adding white space, making your email more readable and organized.
Provide structure throughout the email
Add structure and consistency to your email with the following blocks:
Header bar
Include a header bar block to feature your logo and navigation links, making it easy for readers to explore different sections of your website. Keep your links clear, direct, and relevant to the content in your email.
Split block
Use a split block to show an image alongside text side by side. It’s great for pairing visuals with explanations in a clear and engaging format.
Columns
Opt for a column layout to arrange content side by side. Whether it’s one column or up to four, you can neatly organize different types of content to improve readability and structure.
Tables
Incorporate table blocks to organize content with multiple columns and rows, incorporating text and images. Tables are particularly useful for footers, displaying logos, icons, or navigation elements consistently across different email sections.
Add content within a section or in a column
Incorporate the information and content you need within your email using these blocks:
Text
Share your message clearly and effectively using text blocks within your email sections or columns.
Image
Use an image block to insert an image into your email in a section or column. Customize settings like alt text, URLs for clickable images, and styles to make your emails visually engaging.
Button
Use button blocks for clear calls-to-action (CTAs). Include a main CTA and a few relevant additional buttons with filled-out text and URLs, guiding recipients to take specific actions.
Social links
Add social icons easily with the social link block, linking to your social media profiles like Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and more.
Product
Feature items from your store catalog using the product block. Choose between Dynamic for automatic updates via product feed or Static to manually select catalog items that won't update automatically.
Review quote
If you use Klaviyo Reviews, showcase real customer feedback to build trust and increase conversions. The reviews quote block lets you highlight selected reviews or dynamically display reviews tailored to recipients based on their history.
Pro tip: Save any block as Universal Content by clicking on the star icon next to it. Universal Content consists of favorited elements intended for reuse in future templates. Once set up, access it by clicking on the Universal Content tab. Any edits made to this content will automatically update across all templates where it's been used, ensuring consistency and efficiency in your email campaigns.
Steps to write engaging email copy
Now equipped with email design skills, stay focused on your goal. Follow these steps to craft effective email copy that aligns with your objectives:
Step 1: Create an outline
Start by creating an outline on a sheet of paper to ensure your message aligns with your overall goal. Make sure you identify the marketing goal, ideal list or segments based on target audience, and talking points.
Step 2: Write your copy
Next, write your copy. Make it simple to understand, so you encourage the reader to keep reading. To make your story compelling, tap into humor, urgency, or scarcity to sound more natural and drive engagement. Don’t forget about the CTA button(s). A strong CTA should contain a simple phrase that clearly tells readers what action to take.
Step 3: Identify visuals for your email
Finally, identify the images you’d like to include to reinforce the information you present in text. A combination of imagery and text will instantly make your emails more interesting and appealing. We recommend selecting 1 to 2 high-quality images that align with your goal and break up the text where needed, rather than too many unnecessary images.
Pro tip: Proofread carefully for mistakes or typos and ensure your email meets email accessibility guidelines.
