You know that feeling of dread when…

You've been working hard on your omnichannel strategy, carefully guiding customers from their first interaction to purchase. As you expand, you expect everything to run smoothly. But in today’s unpredictable marketing landscape, many factors are beyond your control. Perhaps your killer welcome email isn't resonating with the latest customer cohort, or a crucial change in the search algorithm is tanking your site visits—both of which can lead to lost revenue.

What if you could identify these issues before they impact your bottom line? That’s where Klaviyo’s custom monitors come in. These alerts notify you instantly of any performance gaps in your critical metrics, allowing you to address issues before they cost you.

Learn how to set up these alerts, integrate them into your strategy, and protect your hard work from unexpected surprises.

    Try it yourself!

If you're already using Klaviyo Advanced KDP, create three of our top custom monitors by navigating to Advanced KDP> Data > Monitors and follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Create a custom monitor to track any drops in site traffic

    Click "Create Custom Monitor."

Select "Single Metric" as your monitor type.

    Name your monitor.

Under "Metric Name," select "Active on Site."

Your first alert rule should say, "Alert when SUM of total number for Active on Site is LESS than [number] in the last [time period]."

Enter the number of users active on site and the time period. For example, you could set it to notify you if there are fewer than 9,000 users active on site in the last 7 days.

    Click "Add Condition."

Change the pre-selected button from "And" to "Or," and "Sum" to "Average."

Under "Select Condition," choose "Relatively Decreased by More Than."

Enter the percentage decrease and the time period for which you want to be notified, as well as the time period you want to compare this performance drop to. For example, you could set it to notify you if the percentage of active users on site drops by 15% in the last 7 days compared to the average of the previous 30 days.

Under "Notifications," choose how you would like to be informed (in-app or email) and which roles should be notified.

Click Save, and you're all set!

Monitor unsubscribe rates for your welcome flow

    Click "Create Custom Monitor."

Select "Single Flow" as your monitor type.

    Name your monitor.

Under "Flow Name," select "Welcome series." Under metric name, select “unsubscribe rate.” Under the message channel, select “email.”some text

Your first alert rule should say, "Alert when unsubscribe rate for email name is LESS than [number] in the last [time period]."

Change less than to more than.

Enter the percentage of unsubscribes and the time period. For example, you could set it to notify you if the average unsubscribe rate is higher than 0.5% in the last 7 days.

    Click "Add Condition."

Change the pre-selected button from "And" to "Or."

Under "Select Condition," choose "absolutely increased by more than."

Enter the percentage increase and the time period for which you want to be notified. For example, notify if the unsubscribe rate increases by 0.2% in the last 1 day. This condition automatically compares the unsubscribe rate to the previous day.

Under "Notifications," choose how you would like to be informed (in-app or email) and which roles should be notified.

Click Save, and you're all set!

Monitor the health of your top integrations

    Click "Create Custom Monitor."

Select "Single Metric" as your monitor type.

    Name your monitor.

Under "Metric Name," and select the metric you would like to view. We will use “opened ticket” for this example.

Your first alert rule should say, "Alert when SUM of total number for opened ticket is more than [number] in the last [time period]."

Enter the number of users who opened a ticket and the time period. For example, you could set it to notify you if there are more than 100 opened tickets on site in the last 7 days.

    Click "Add Condition."

Change the pre-selected button from "And" to "Or." Change the pre-selected button from sum to average

Under "select condition," choose "absolutely increased by more than."

Enter the value and the time period for which you want to be notified, as well as the time period you want to compare this ticket increase to. For example, you could set it to notify you if the average number of tickets absolutely increased more than 10 in the last 7 days compared to the average of the previous 30 days.

Under "Notifications," choose how you would like to be informed (in-app or email) and which roles should be notified.

Click Save, and you're all set!

The three types of custom monitors:

Create custom monitors for single metrics, flows, or segments. Explore the cards below to learn about each monitor type and see a use case for applying them to your brand.

    Monitor key metrics

    Feature Overview:

Set up a single metric monitor to receive alerts on a metric from custom or third-party integrations, allowing you to quickly identify and address any disruptions, such as changes in active on-site visitors or the health of your newest integration.

    Customer Example:

SWAK Cosmetics set up an alert to monitor active on-site events, ensuring their marketing efforts were effective. When they noticed a sudden drop in site visitors over seven days, the alert pinpointed the issue—a website change was causing redirect errors. This enabled the SWAK team to resolve the problem before significant revenue loss occurred.

    Monitor key segments

    Feature Overview:

Proactively monitor the number of profiles added to a key segment in real-time. This feature allows you to track growth rates, quickly investigate any drops, and ensure your segment is performing as expected.

    Customer Example:

When a customer soft bounces 7 times, it becomes a hard bounce. Because soft bounces impact deliverability, SWAK Cosmetics wanted to be proactive. They created a chronic soft bounce segment that captured profiles that soft bounced at least 3 times. When they saw a surge one week, the SWAK team diagnosed the issue and created a reputation repair plan to reduce the number of soft bounces.

    Monitor key flows

    Feature Overview:

Monitor a key performance metric for a flow, such as clicks, conversions, unsubscribes, or total recipients. This allows you to address a performance drop in a critical flow before it significantly impacts your revenue or deliverability.

    Customer Example:

A strong welcome flow is crucial for nurturing customers throughout their journey. When unsubscribe rates started to rise over the past 30 days, SWAK’s custom monitor sent an in-app notification, prompting the team to take action. They conducted a series of A/B tests to identify the issue, allowing them to address it quickly, minimizing any lost revenue.
